Looking for some tips and ideas for buying home security cameras for our home (outdoor surveillance).
I would recommend a weatherproof security camera system with infrared sensors. Wireless security cameras are most convenient as well. If you are on a tight budget, you could try dummy cameras. As long as they are clearly visible, they may scare some bad guys away.

HOME SECURITY CAMERA AND LIGHT?
OKAY, THUGS HAVE BEEN VANDALISING MY CAR AND SPLASHED PAINT ALLOVER MY DRIVEWAY, AND I HAVE NO EVIDENCE AGAINST THEM. THE POLICE TOLD ME TO GET A SURVEILLANCE CAMERA, AND I HARDELY HAVE ANY MONEY (EMBARRASSED!). I PURCHASED A WEBCAM, AND SOFTWARE THAT LETS YOU RECORD WITH TIME DATE STAMPING ETC. I ALSO PURCHASED A DESK LAMP WITH ADJUSTABLE HINGES. THESE BOTH STAND ON MY WINDOWSILL UPSTAIRS, AND POINT OUT OF THE WINDOW TOWARDS THE DRIVEWAY. I WAS WONDERING, DOES IT SOUND SUFFICIENT TO CATCH THE LITTLE THUGS. I THOUGHT IT CAN ACT LIKE A SECURITY CAMERA AND SECURITY LIGHT. IT IS REALLY ALL I COULD GET ON MY BUDGET.

Sure, there's still privacy, but some of the old indicators are no longer reliable. In this case the owner of the computer deliberately introduced some non-privacy software in case it was stolen, much as some automobile owners equip their vehicles with LoJack and some stores and have silent burglary alarms: to pierce the privacy of lawbreakers while not disturbing the illusion. I suppose the surveillance cameras that cover the UK pierce the privacy of everyone, so I see what you mean, but most of the time a person's home remains his/her castle.
