my old directv tivo brand dvr broke awhile ago. when i called directv all they would offer me as a replacement was their d.v.r.
bottomline this d.vr is retarded, and it's my second of the drectv version. it records things at random....forgets to record shows i have picked. basically it's crap. tivo dvr is a billion times better.
can i get a tivo dvr on my own? how would that work when i already have directv';s version. at this point i don't care if i half to pay outta pocket...this is how bad it sucks.. any advice would be great.

Usually the DirecTV dvr isn't so bad as you make it seem. If it's recording things at random it may have a feature that records programs that it thinks you may like (this CAN be turned off!). Or, it could have been a refurbished unit that still has some scheduled recordings. If it's forgetting to record things you've picked think if there could be any reason WHY (such as you told it to record once when you wanted it to record a series).
If you want a TiVo brand one you can't get it through DirecTV as they no longer partner with TiVo. You can, however purchase one from someone else, however DirecTV will require that you pay $20 for a new access card for that receiver (instead of running the chance that you end up having to pay up to $200 in ppv charges that the previous owner had on there). Even though you have a DirecTV dvr, if you were to have a TiVo as well you would only be charged the $5.99 dvr fee once as it is a service fee, not per-receiver fee.
A good place to look would be ebay as a lot of people are looking to sell theirs. Also, you could look for one at local yard sales when that season comes around. Just keep in mind that you could end up with a dud doing that, so be careful with what you purchase.
