Would it be possible to use a battery recharger as a safe power supply?
I work in a school in Kazakhstan where there are limited facilities. I was hoping to get a safe supply of direct current from the mains (A.C. 220v) by using a 12v battery recharger. Would this be feasible and safe?
Thanks for your answer. How would I overload it? Would an electrolysis cell risk overload?
If you used a piece of copper wire as a load it would draw too much current (short circuit) and would not be safe. Batteries have internal resistances that limit current to a safe level, avoiding fires or damage to the charger. The charger must be designed for your AC supply (in the USA that is usually 110 volts at 60Hz). Often the charger nameplate will indicate the output voltage (AC or DC) and the 'safe' amps that it can produce (or amp range may be shown on an indicator). Car battery chargers usually produce 12 volt DC and currents perhaps to several amps (mine goes up to twelve amps!). You may be able to limit current in an electrolysis cell by limiting plate size or by using a variable resistor in the circuit. Also a short demonstration would likely be safer than continuous service.
